An automatic fire sprinkler system helped contain a refrigerator fire at a Delhaize supermarket in Ath, Belgium, on October 11, 2026. The incident occurred early in the morning when the store was empty. No injuries were reported.

Sprinkler System Operates Before Staff Arrive
According to the International Fire Suppression Alliance (IFSA), the fire started in a refrigerator near the supermarket's fish counter at approximately 4:00 a.m.
With no customers or employees inside the building, nobody was present to immediately detect the fire or raise the alarm. The automatic sprinkler system operated, and firefighters from the Wallonia Picardy emergency zone quickly contained the incident.
The store manager reported that the incident resulted in smoke and water cleanup, but no one was injured.
Importance of Automatic Sprinklers in Commercial Buildings
This incident highlights the value of automatic fire sprinkler systems in supermarkets and other commercial buildings.
Retail premises often contain refrigeration equipment, electrical appliances, packaging materials and other potential fire hazards. Fires may also occur outside normal business hours, when buildings are unoccupied.
An automatic sprinkler system can respond to heat without waiting for someone to discover the fire and manually activate firefighting equipment.
Fire Protection for Unoccupied Premises
The supermarket incident demonstrates why reliable automatic fire protection is important even when a building has no occupants.
Proper sprinkler selection, installation and maintenance are essential to system performance. Commercial building owners should ensure that their fire protection systems are suitable for the building's layout, occupancy and potential fire risks.
